Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' Adapted for the stage by Tim Luscombe 'No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be a heroine.' But as the lights of Bath fade into the dark shadows of Northanger Abbey, will Catherine Morland be able to discover the dreadful secret of the Tilney's? Or will she first be diverted by the sinister Mr Thorpe, and the cunning wiles of the seductive Isobelle? Perhaps all is lost...or perhaps Catherine reads too many books? Arena will be presenting Jane Austen's satire 'Northanger Abbey' at the Old Mill Theatre this October. Combining the thrill of 'Frankenstine', the lust of 'Udolpho' and of course the charm of, well...Austen. The Players: (All ages are stage ages) Catherine Morland:(17)Naive and innocent Catherine is thrust into a world of betrayal and intrique, the horror of which she cannot comprehend. Of course this is mostly due to her own over active imagination and lack of discernment. Mrs Allen: (35-55)The moderately wealthy, but childless benefactress of our unlikely heroine. Mr's Allen can think of nothing but muslin and does wish she had a larger acquaintance in bath. (Middle aged and quite rediculous) Isabella Thorpe: (19-21)Although she claims she 'never thinks of herself' Isobel's reoccupation with the 'diversions' of Bath will land her in trouble,no matter how manipulative and seductive she may be. Henry Tilney: (25-30)Tall, dark and almost handsome, this witty clergyman charms his way into Catherine's heart. Quite the romantic, and often unpredictable he may or may not hide a dark, deep, terrible secret. John Thorpe: (21-25)John Thorpe is an 18th century bogan. Gruff and boorish he seeks to win the affections of Miss Morland although his attention is far more captivated by fast carriages and a good horse. Nevertheless he will stop at nothing to out best Henry Tilney no matter the devastating consequences to Catherine. James Morland/Frederick Tilney: (19/29)The devoted, loyal and optimistic James never stood a chance against his smarmy counterpart Frederick. But will either be ensnared by the wilful Isabella? This duel role shall be a challenge and a lot of fun for the right actor. Eleanor Tilney: (21)Perceptive and strong, what secret does this gentlewoman hide behind her sad eyes? Eleanor proves to be a friend to Catherine in her greatest hour of need. General Tilney: (40-60)Stern and opressive the general rules his family with an iron rod in one hand and a clock in the other. Why won't he allow Catherine to enter the west wing at Northanger Abbey? Alice/Dorothy:(20-40) Is this ghostly spectre a wizened old women, or a cheery English housemaid? What does she know about the secret and Northanger Abbey, and will she divulge that information to Catherine? Dancers/Socialites:(16-100)Multiple silent roles, for crowd and ball room dance scenes, a fun opportunity for anyone who wants to dress up and be involved. (May double as stage hands if they want to be more gainfully occupied during the show) Auditions will be held on the weekend of the 17th and 18th of July this year of our lord, 2009. 'Lost the plot' is a unique, innovative and absolutely hilarious exploration of storytelling. Inspired by Christopher Booker's highly acclaimed work, 'The Seven Basic Plots', this theatrical adventure takes a quirky and informative look at why human beings tell each other tales. Touring to Schools in June 2009 'Lost the Plot' Needs You! Yes You! Are you funny? Do you like theatre sports? Interested in english literature? Huge Drew Carey fan? Then 'Lost the Plot' might be just the production for you! Workshop Auditions will be held on Saturday the 28th of March, with callbacks the following week. No specific preparation will be required- however you will need to dust off those improvisational skills. The suitable applicant will be able to apply for a working with childrens check, and available for a three week metro touring season in June. (School Hours) Previous experience in schools or with improvisational theatre is preferred, but not a requirement.
